Professor William Schabas speaks on issues of genocide

Professor Schabas introduces himself and considers his visit in the lead-up to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. He then considers issues related to the 1948 Genocide Convention and the caselaw of the ICTY and the ICTR.

Visit to 1994 Rwanda Genocide Memorial sites in March 2004. Ten years after the killing of at least 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus, two sites -- Murambi and Ntarama Church -- are visited to remember and remind people of the genocide which transpired in this Central African State.

Church Memorial Site

Genocide Memorial Site of the Church at Ntarama where approximately 5000 Tutsis were killed on 15 April 1994 ; as part of an overall genocidal campaign.

This site was visited as part of a 2004 human rights field trip undertaken by the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria.
