African System of Human and Peoples' Rights The African system of human rights protection takes its lead from the 1981 Banjul Charter of Human and Peoples' Rights. Dr. Ibrahim Ali Badawi El-Sheikh, former Chair of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights discusses the evolution of the Commission and the role which Non-Governmental Organizations have played in the this process. Dr. Badawi considers the role of the Commission, its complains procedure, and the lack of funding which affects its ability to carry out its mandate. Dr. Badawi then speaks about the role of Chair of the Commission as well as explaining what transpires during a session of the Commission, and finally what has stood out in his mind during his tenure with the African Commission. |

Here Thomas Buergenthal, Judge at the International Court of Justice, introduces the elements of his career, including his time as a judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Judge Buergenthal then introduces the Inter-American system and speaks of his time as President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights which is situated in San Jose, Costa Rica. |
